Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the Hernandez family during this incredibly difficult time. The community stands in solidarity with Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez, his wife, Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and their daughter, Lauren Stinson, as they mourn the tragic loss of their beloved son and brother, Leyton Hernandez. Leyton passed away at the age of 28 following a two-car accident Friday afternoon while traveling outside the Coastal Bend.
Leyton Hernandez was a dedicated educator, mentor, and coach who made a meaningful impact in the lives of many students and athletes. In his fifth year at Veterans Memorial High School, he served both as a teacher and a multi-sport coach, guiding young people with passion, encouragement, and leadership. His commitment to helping students succeed both in the classroom and on the field reflected his strong character and genuine care for others.
A proud graduate of King High School, Leyton continued his education at Texas State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2020. During his time at the university, he was an active member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, forming friendships and memories that would remain with him throughout his life. Before his career in education, Leyton was also recognized as an accomplished high school athlete and a college football recruit, demonstrating the determination and discipline that later defined his work as a coach.
Family was central to Leyton’s life. One cherished tradition he shared with his father was their annual trip to the state football championship game—a special nine-year bond built through their shared love of the sport.
Leyton will be remembered for his enthusiasm, kindness, and the positive influence he had on everyone around him. His legacy lives on through the students he inspired, the athletes he mentored, and the countless lives he touched.
As the Hernandez family navigates this unimaginable loss, the community continues to offer support, prayers, and compassion while respectfully honoring their request for privacy during this time of mourning.
