James Joseph Smith III Williamstown Death & Obituary: Longtime Williams Valley Teacher and Coach James J. Smith III Dies at 78

James Joseph Smith III, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, coach, and proud serviceman, passed away suddenly at his home in Williamstown on March 14, 2026, at the age of 78. His passing leaves a profound sense of loss among his family, friends, former students, and the community he served faithfully for decades.

Born on March 7, 1948, James lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love for others. He was a proud graduate of Williams Valley High School’s Class of 1966 and later attended Lock Haven University, where he earned his degree in education. With a passion for teaching and mentoring young people, James devoted 38 years of his life to the Williams Valley School District. During that time, he taught physical education, health, and driver’s training, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.

Beyond the classroom, James was deeply involved in athletics at his alma mater. He coached both wrestling and football, guiding young athletes not only in sports but also in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. His dedication to shaping young lives extended far beyond the playing field, and many remember him as a mentor who truly cared about their future.

James also served his country with honor as a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for 33 years. His commitment to service reflected his strong sense of duty and devotion to community and country.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James II and Evelynn Adams Smith, as well as his infant children Kimberly, Jeremy, and Joseph, and his beloved granddaughter Alyssa Marie.

James leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Verda; his sons Eric (Alison) and James (Bethany); and his cherished grandchildren Elijah, Madysen, and James. He is also survived by his siblings Patricia English (Joseph), Evelynn McConnell (Steve), and Donald Smith (Jennifer).

Following his wishes, James will be laid to rest privately at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Williamstown. In his memory, donations may be made to Williamstown EMS, honoring a life dedicated to service, family, and community.
