Athens Shooting Report: Second Victim in Downtown Athens Shooting Dies

A second young man has died as a result of a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning, Athens‑Clarke County police confirmed Monday.

Authorities say 19‑year‑old Dylan Bentley, of Jefferson, succumbed to his injuries Sunday after being shot in the incident, which took place at approximately 2:20 a.m. Saturday on North Jackson Street. Bentley’s death follows the Saturday killing of 22‑year‑old Clayton Adams, of Hull.

A third victim, 20‑year‑old Landon Skinner, was also wounded in the shooting. Skinner was struck in the eye and remains hospitalized in critical condition at an Atlanta medical facility, according to police.

The suspect, 22‑year‑old Mark Anthony Desousa of Jefferson, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of murder and aggravated battery. Desousa remains in jail without having received a bond hearing.

Police Lt. Katie Jenkins stated Monday that a motive for the shooting is still under investigation. However, investigators have indicated that Desousa was acquainted with all three victims. Officers described Skinner as a close friend of the alleged shooter.

According to the arrest warrant, Desousa shot Bentley in the back of the head. Police allege that he approached Bentley and fired “without provocation.” The warrant also states that Skinner was shot after Bentley was wounded, and that Adams was killed after being shot multiple times by Desousa.

Following the shooting, Desousa fled the scene in a dark sedan. Several law enforcement agencies participated in a subsequent manhunt, and Desousa was located and arrested in nearby Jackson County, in the vicinity of his home, Jenkins reported.

Police continue their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Athens‑Clarke County Police Department.
