Matt Hinkin Tennessee, Death, Obituary: Beloved Professional Meteorologist And Community Leader, Matt Hinkin, Has Passed.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matt Hinkin, a beloved meteorologist, mentor, and cherished member of the East Tennessee community, who died at the age of 62. Over a remarkable career spanning more than three decades at WATE-TV, Matt became a trusted and familiar voice for weather forecasting, guiding viewers through storms, natural disasters, and the everyday weather with expertise, calm, and care.

Affectionately known by audiences who would greet him with, “Hey Matt! What’s the weather?” Hinkin was far more than a meteorologist. For 31 years, he was a fixture on 6 News, bringing warmth, reliability, and a sense of reassurance to viewers. Beyond his broadcasts, he dedicated himself to the community, frequently visiting local schools, supporting events across East Tennessee, and inspiring young people with his passion for science, education, and the natural world. His role as co-host of the Saturday morning show New at the Zoo alongside Tim Adams introduced generations of children to wildlife, including an educational journey to Africa during its ninth season.

Matt’s professional life was defined by dedication, skill, and calm leadership during challenging times. He guided the community through historic events such as the Blizzard of ’93 and the Gatlinburg wildfires, earning the trust and admiration of colleagues and viewers alike. A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, Matt earned a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University and an Atmospheric Science degree from the University of Kansas. He began his career at KSNF-TV in Joplin, Missouri, and KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kansas, before joining WATE in 1990, where he spent the bulk of his distinguished career.

Even while facing personal challenges, including living with Parkinson’s Disease, Matt displayed courage, resilience, and generosity. He raised awareness and provided support through the PJ Parkinson’s Support group and remained committed to helping others. A devout Christian, his kindness, humility, and selflessness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He was deeply loved by his family, including his late wife Deborah, with whom he shared 28 years of marriage, as well as countless friends, colleagues, and community members.

Matt Hinkin’s legacy is one of service, inspiration, and dedication. Through his work, mentorship, and compassion, he touched countless lives, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of the East Tennessee community he so dearly loved. May he rest in eternal peace.
