For generations of Dundee supporters, Gordon Wallace will always be remembered as the man who scored the winning goal when the club last lifted a major trophy. On December 15, 1973, in the League Cup Final at Hampden Park, Wallace delivered a moment that would become immortal in Dundee folklore. In the 75th minute, he expertly controlled a Bobby Wilson free kick with his chest, turned sharply with his back to goal, and fired past Celtic goalkeeper Ally Hunter. It was a goal of remarkable skill and composure—one that secured Dundee’s League Cup triumph and instantly elevated Wallace to legendary status among the Dark Blue faithful.
Born and raised in Dundee, Wallace’s journey to that iconic moment was one shaped by dedication and perseverance. A supporter of the club from a young age, he grew up watching his hero Billy Steel at Dens Park and dreamed of one day representing his hometown team. His early football career saw him play for Rockwell School, Lawside Rangers, and Dundee North End, where his talent began to shine.
Although initially released by Dundee, Wallace refused to let that setback define his career. After spells with Alyth United and Montrose—where he scored prolifically—he joined Raith Rovers and enjoyed tremendous success. His outstanding performances, including a remarkable 30-goal season that helped save the club from relegation, earned him the prestigious Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year award, making him the first player outside the Old Firm to receive the honor.
Dundee would eventually bring Wallace back to Dens Park in 1969, a move that proved invaluable. Over his time with the club, he scored an impressive 119 goals, placing him among Dundee’s all-time leading scorers. Known for his sharp footballing intelligence and clinical finishing, Wallace played a central role in the exciting football enjoyed by supporters throughout the early 1970s.
