The Bulloch County community mourns the passing of former County Chairman Roy Gene Thompson, a man whose life was defined by service, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to the people of the community he loved. Known affectionately by many as “Mr. Roy,” he was more than a public official—he was a trusted mentor, a devoted community leader, and a friend whose impact will be remembered for generations.
Roy Thompson dedicated decades of his life to public service in Bulloch County. Beginning his civic journey on the Planning & Zoning Commission, he later served as a county commissioner before eventually becoming Chairman of the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners. Throughout his years of leadership, he set a standard of integrity, humility, and dedication that inspired colleagues, staff members, and citizens alike. His leadership was marked by a genuine concern for the wellbeing of others and a belief that strong communities are built through compassion and cooperation.
Beyond public office, Roy and his late wife Deborah were pillars of the local business community. Together with their family, they operated Statesboro Floor Covering, where they not only built a successful business but also strengthened relationships throughout the region. Their business reflected the same values Roy carried into public service—hard work, honesty, and a deep sense of responsibility to the community.
Roy’s generosity extended far beyond his professional roles. For many years, the Thompson family opened their TMT Farms during the Christmas season, transforming it into a festive gathering place that brought joy to countless families. More importantly, the event served as a platform for collecting food, toys, and donations for those in need, demonstrating Roy’s enduring commitment to helping the less fortunate.
His dedication to youth development was equally significant. Roy served on the Recreation Department board and volunteered as a youth sports coach for decades, mentoring countless young people and teaching them the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Many who crossed paths with Roy speak of his kindness and encouragement. He welcomed aspiring leaders, offered guidance freely, and believed in the potential of others to make a difference. His door was always open, and his heart always willing to serve.
As Bulloch County lowers its flags in his honor, the community reflects on a life well lived. Roy Gene Thompson’s legacy is one of leadership, compassion, and enduring service. Though he will be deeply missed, his example will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
