Jack L. “Hungry Jack” Pemberton, 82, of Modoc, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of Friday, March 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. His passing marks the loss of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warm spirit and hardworking nature left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Born on March 23, 1943, in Jasper, Tennessee, Jack was the son of the late Clarence Milton and Geneva Lucille (Blaylock) Pemberton. He graduated from Grundy County High School in Tracy City, Tennessee, in 1962 and quickly became known for his strong work ethic and determination. Jack spent 40 dedicated years working for Chrysler Corporation, where he operated a hammer press for three decades before retiring in 2003. His years of service reflected his commitment to providing for his family and contributing to the community.
On June 30, 1979, Jack married the love of his life, Christine “Teena” Kilgore. Together they built not only a life but also a business that became a beloved gathering place for many. The couple purchased the Blue Moon Restaurant in Losantville, where Jack became famous for crafting homemade pizza from scratch. Always thinking of others, he expanded the restaurant to include a pizza and arcade room filled with games and pool tables, creating a welcoming space for families and young people. They later operated the Modoc Diner for five years, where Jack served not only as an owner but also as the friendly face greeting customers at the door.
Outside of work, Jack had a passion for racing and adventure. Alongside his brother-in-law Mike Moran, he owned a white Camaro Pro Street race car named “Casper,” which gained recognition for becoming the first Pro Street car to break the 200-mile-per-hour mark. He also loved fishing, especially his annual salmon trips with friends, and enjoyed gardening, working outdoors, and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts.
Above all, Jack will be remembered for his generous heart and welcoming personality. Known as a gifted storyteller with a remarkable memory, he never met a stranger. After retiring, he cherished his role as “Papaw,” finding immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren.
Jack leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 47 years, Teena, along with his children, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Boling officiating, followed by burial at Mooreland Cemetery. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and dedication will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
