Scottish football has lost one of its gentlest giants with the passing of Jim Fleeting, who left us on 15 March 2026, aged 70. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, coach, mentor, and visionary, Jim’s life was defined not only by his remarkable achievements on the pitch but by his unwavering dedication to people, communities, and the development of the sport he loved.
Jim’s playing and managerial career spanned clubs including Norwich City, Ayr United, Clyde, Greenock Morton, Stirling Albion, and Kilmarnock. Yet it was his work off the pitch that left the most enduring mark. As Scottish FA’s Director of Football Development, based at Largs, Jim shaped generations of coaches through his wisdom, humility, and steadfast belief in continuous learning. His influence extended beyond Scotland, impacting coaching standards and football development across Europe.
Closer to home, Jim’s commitment to community sport was equally profound. In 1999, he supported local advocates Jim Hodge and Jim McCubbin in campaigning for improved football facilities in Kilwinning. He played a key role in forming the steering group that led to the creation of Kilwinning Community Sports Club. His belief in nurturing community sport and supporting those building it helped transform Pennyburn Playing Fields into a vibrant hub of football, wellbeing, and opportunity—one of the town’s most cherished institutions.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife Irene, his children Gemma, Barry, and Julie, and nine adored grandchildren, many of whom carry forward his love for Kilwinning Community Sports Club. Watching them grow, play, and contribute to the club’s heartbeat brought him immense pride and joy.
Jim’s legacy lives on in every child who pulls on their boots at Pennyburn, in every volunteer who gives their time, and in every coach who benefited from his guidance. His vision, kindness, and passion strengthened communities, inspired countless individuals, and left Scottish football richer for his contributions.
He will be remembered with deep gratitude, enduring respect, and great love. Jim Fleeting’s life was a testament to dedication, humility, and service to others—a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations.
